The Essential Holiday Movie List

Bridget Jone's Diary/ Photo via Miramax

Long nights and cold weather make this the opportune time for Netflix sessions. When you wait all year to watch the holiday themed movies, you best be making sure you don't miss out on the (modern) classics. Here are the can't-miss-flicks of the Christmas season:

For Nostalgia:
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas - The perfect movie for that time in-between Halloween and Christmas.
  • Home Alone 2 - The way Kevin Mcallister navigates the drama, adventure, glamour, and food scene (cheese pizza anyone?) of New York during the Christmas season is goals!
  • The Grinch Who Stole Christmas - Let's face it, the Grinch's grumpiness is relatable af when the Holiday grind gets tough. Available on Netflix.
  • Elf - This is a great movie to watch when you can't find someone who can match your level of excitement and Christmas spirit. Alternatively, it serves as a good a palette cleanser if you're starting to relate a little too much with the Grinch. Available on Freeform.
  • Harry Potter (all of them) -  Perfect for those nights when you need to be reminded about the magic of the season.
For Romance:
  • Bridget Jones's Diary - They don't make movies like this anymore, people! Hilarious, relatable, cringeworthy and accurately depicts romance, friends, family, love, and failed recipes. Available on Netflix.
  • The Holiday - The romance is great but Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz also make a strong case for why cozy nights in for the season are better than anything else. Available on Amazon Video.
  • Love Actually - Charming. Check! British. Check! Star studded ensemble cast with a million adorable love stories at Christmas. Check! What more do you need in a holiday film?
  • When Harry Met Sally - We're forcing this classic rom-com into the list because of that amazing New Year's Eve scene.
For Laughs:
  • The Night Before - A modern and relevant depiction of the millennial Christmas experience, especially in the day and age of Santacon.
  • Why Him - The Silicon Valley setting is a refreshing departure from traditional movies and James Franco and Keegan Michael Key are downright hilarious in this one! Available on HBO Go.
  • Office Christmas Party - Simultaneously inspiring and frightening inspiration for what could happen at your office's very own holiday party.

An Asian Manicure...CRYSTAL ENCRUSTED NAILS

However ridiculous the nail art in Asia may be, there are still a few enticing things that make us want our nails done with CRAY crystals and insane colours. Over the past weekend in Shanghai I became a victim to this nail art with DIAMOND ENCRUSTED NAILS. Thankfully, I did not do this to ALL of my fingers. I decided doing both of my ring fingers would suffice. My cousin and I sat at a nail salon for approximately 2 hours getting a light grey/purple-ish shellac colour as our base (something very neutral and muted) to go along with our RIDICULOUS ring fingers. I must say after it was done we couldn't stop taking photos of them...at dinner, the bar, brunch... UP NEXT: Heading to TOKYO FASHION WEEK!!! Stay tuned for more...

Cappuccinos and Caviar

Ever heard of Caviar Nails? I recently picked up this awesome kit from Lane Crawford the other day in rose gold. I wasn't sure how it would play out or if it would look too much if I did all my nails so I tested the waters and decided just to caviar my ring fingers (such it seems the trend to change up the ring finger nail). In the end I thought it looked pretty blingy and matched my morning cappuccino from The Petit Cafe just perfectly. The texture is also very interesting! I kept touching my nails consistently! Definitely an easy DIY manicure.

Japan Photo Diary

Just got back from an amazing Christmas trip to Japan! Definitely one of my favourite countries - it is just so clean, everyone is extremely polite, friendly, and the FOOD! Simply phenomenal. It is quite impossible to have a bad meal in Japan. We spent our time mainly in Osaka and a few days in Kyoto. Kyoto is a beautifully historic city with a lot to see and do. Osaka is FOOD CITY! I probably spent most of my time eating and then navigating to my next restaurant to try other delicious delights. Japan also has some of the best bread and no matter where you go, everything is packaged PERFECTLY. I mean perfectly - from little candies, pickled vegetables to bento boxes sold at 7-11. It was also quite fun getting a chance to use my terrible Japanese - being half Japanese I wish I knew a little more. I am also glad I kept up my reading skills as I found it very helpful to be able to read as there wasn't too much English around. Here are some of my favourite snapshots from my trip all from my iPhone (if you don't have the photo editing app called 'Snapseed' I highly recommend it)! Enjoy!
